O Most High, when I am afraid,
I put my trust in you.
As a child,
it was darkness,
lights out, closed door darkness.
And the unknown under the bed and did I leave my closet door ajar
and why does the radiator make that noise?
We grow and our fears change, but not really in their substance.
We fear different darkness and unknowns still haunt us.
And paralysis sometimes lodges in our throats,
leaving us with shorter breaths and silence.
But we are God's and God is faithful.
And in our fear we find the fullness of God's strength
in which to abide, a promise kept,
a hope unyielding.
