FOR MAY 14th 2017

The Rev. Dr. Keith A. Spencer

Trinity Lutheran Church, Pembroke Pines, FL

·        Remember, only two services on Sunday at 8:30AM and 10AM, both in the sanctuary.

·        During each service, following Communion, we will enter into a brief special congregational meeting for the purpose of voting on the proposal to allow a next door preschool that is seeking to be licensed to build a required play ground on a small section of our property just south of the fenced in area behind Charter Hall. In return we receive use of the playground and a monthly donation. They will be inspected and licensed by the City of Pembroke Pines, carry their own insurance, and maintain their playground. Should we ever decide to sell that portion of land, the agreement allows for the contract to be broken with notice. It will be fenced.

·        Pre Sale of tickets for the May Gala was going too slowly, so we took that as a sign that we needed to re-think the event. The result is the free Mother’s Day Brunch now set for Sunday May 14th at 11AM in Charter Hall. We will have donation stations for a love offering to support the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s International Women’s Leadership Project.  There will also be a prize table and everyone who attends will receive a ticket that they may place in a cup in front of the prize they are interested in. Additional tickets are $1 with all proceeds also going to support the ELCA International Women’s Fund.

·        I will be away from Monday through Friday in San Antonio, Texas, for some continuing education  at the Festival of Homiletics where I will also be serving as videographer and co-photographer on behalf of the festival organizers, Luther Seminary.

·        As we approach the summer months, it is especially important for folks to consider how they might want to serve in new or additional ways as worship helpers. Readers and greeters and Assisting Ministers, and Altar Guild helpers and ushers and Communion Assistants are all needed. Training available. It doesn’t matter how long you have been with us or how old (or young) you are – we would love to have you! Just check the block on your worship slip or contact Lisa Montalchi.

The Gospel for Sunday, May 14, 2017:

Dr. Kristin Berkey-Abbott

John 14:1-14

The Gospel text for this Sunday has much to say to modern people.  I come back again and again to the beginning:  "Let not your hearts be troubled."  We are in a time period where so many of us have troubled hearts.

I worry about our hearts becoming hard as stones once we all decide that we're tired of being troubled.  History shows us this trajectory.  Right now many of us are steadfast in our resistance to becoming a country that doesn't seem true to our values.  But what happens when we grow tired?

I look at the way part of this passage has been misused, verse 6:  "Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'"  I think of all the ways that passage has been used to persecute those who believe differently.  Are we ultimately on that path?

I worry about the ways that so many of us are engaged in binary thinking, the either-or, in or out thinking that can get us into so much trouble.  We spend much time with ideas exactly identical to ours.  We can go for weeks/months/years without meeting someone with different political ideas than ours.  We live in a different kind of segregated world than that of half a century ago, but it's no less dangerous a segregation.

On Sunday, morning, in my Internet ramblings, I came across a quote from Thomas Merton, in this post from the ever-wonderful Parker Palmer:

"This is of course the ultimate temptation of Christianity! To say that Christ has locked all the doors, has given one answer, settled everything and departed, leaving all life enclosed in the frightful consistency of a system outside of which there is seriousness and damnation, inside of which there is the intolerable flippancy of the saved — while nowhere is there any place left for the mystery of the freedom of divine mercy which alone is truly serious, and worthy of being taken seriously.”

In this quote, we see a way forward.  Even as so many of us are in despair about so many things, God is making creation whole again, in ways that we don't always perceive.

The Gospel text for this week includes an implicit invitation.  Jesus invites us to be part of this redemption of creation when he says, "Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it."

Where and how will you respond to this call?

For the specific purpose of voting on Trinity council’s recommendation to grant an easement to 7100 pines plaza INC and Sky sunshine daycare for the establishment of a playground

ü Trinity was approached last summer with a request for an easement for a daycare moving in next door to build a required playground on our property so that they could be licensed and operate.

ü Council spent the last 9 months negotiating with the daycare and the shopping center to ensure the final agreement was satisfactory to all parties. Throughout this process, Tom Gearhart, Al and Shirley Gearhart’s son and a lawyer, guided us and reviewed every draft. We have also been in touch with both our insurance company and our current loan holder to ensure that the agreement is satisfactory in their eyes.

ü The daycare will have its own insurance and hold liability. They will be inspected, reviewed, and licensed by the City of Pembroke Pines. They are responsible for maintaining the area.

ü The area in question is the Trinity property south of the current fenced in area behind Charter Hall extending approximately 85 feet to the south and no further west then the current fence that surrounds the large ficus behind Charter. For those who remember the Prayer Labyrinth, it covers essentially the same area.

ü We are granting an easement for the expressed  purpose of allowing the construction of the playground. Trinity will continue to own the land and is contractually permitted to use the playground when it is not in use by the pre-school. The easement is on a four-ear renewable contract  with an escape clause should Trinity decide to sell that portion of the land sometime in the future.

ü For the easement Trinity will be permitted to use the playground (designed for pre-school age children for a Monday through Friday pre school) and received $250 a month compensation that increases $50 a month each year of the agreement is in force.  The playground will be fenced in for security. There is no cost to Trinity for allowing the easement or maintaining it.

ü If you have any questions prior to the meeting please direct them to either Council President Eileen Soler or Pastor Keith

A second AED Memorial Fund has been established in order to provide an AED for Charter Hall in addition to the one already purchased for the Sanctuary. In case of a heart attack seconds matter, so having an AED in a building where so many people spend coffee hour and other activities is important. Our goal is $1400.

You may use the special offering envelopes located on the offering and prayer card stand or write “AED Fund” on the memo line on the check. If paying via Trinity’s PAYPAL account please indicate that it is for the AED Fund on the memo line that paypal  provides.
